About
Our History
For more than 90 years, The Macaroon Shop has been delighting customers with our famous coconut and almond macaroons, along with a delicious selection of cakes, cookies, pies, and pastries baked fresh each day.
Our story began in 1930 at the North End Hotel on the Ocean Grove boardwalk, where locals and vacationers lined up each summer for macaroons. What started as a small, seasonal bakery has grown into a year-round tradition and a sweet taste of the Jersey Shore for generations.
Today, you’ll find us at 107 Main Street in Avon-by-the-Sea, still baking with the same care and quality that made us a local favorite. And for those who can’t make it to the Shore, we ship our signature macaroons, bringing a taste of the Jersey Shore to homes across the continental USA.
A Brief History of the Macaroon
“Almonds ground into a paste, mixed with honey and baked” — that simple phrase describes one of the oldest sweet traditions in the world.
Unlike cookies, true macaroons contain no flour. The word macaroon comes from the Italian macarone, meaning “paste,” referring to the ground almonds used as a base.
The European Influence
Italy and France were key to the macaroon’s rise across Europe. In Italy, regional variations appeared using almonds, pine nuts, or pistachios.
The French refined the almond recipe and introduced lighter, meringue-based versions.
In Switzerland, bakers took things a step further by coating macaroons in fine chocolate.
Then, coconut became a popular base – creating the chewy, golden coconut macaroons so many know and love today.
Our Traditional Recipes
Since 1930, The Macaroon Shop has continued the tradition with recipes perfected over generations. Our coconut macaroons are made using a unique Swiss recipe, while our almond macaroons follow a gourmet French-Italian blend known for its smooth texture and balanced sweetness.
You’ll often find French macarons available in our store, but they’re simply too delicate for shipping. Our coconut and almond macaroons travel beautifully and can be shipped anywhere in the continental U.S.A.
